Radio Ground-Wave Observations and Modeling of the Earth-Troposphere Waveguide Effects Using Mf/Hf Radar ( I ~ III )

Since 2010, and 2012, National Central University has built up two NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) MF/HF digital radars, also referred as Dynasondes, at HuaLien (23.89N, 121.55E), and Longquan (22.67° N, 120.60° E), separately, in Taiwan. Two dynasondes can also perform joined observations and be a bistatic system. The dynasonde observations can be also used for MF/HF radio frequency environment surveillance. The recorded signals also include ground-wave radio data, e.g. local amplitude-modulation (AM) signals from nearby transmitters. In this study, we address a particular class of ground-wave propagation scenarios in the presence of surface terrain and atmospheric refractivity. Beginning with idealized analytically solvable models over a smooth spherical Earth, we trace the progression toward a more “reality” model for tropospheric wave-guide propagation. The corresponding tropospheric data including atmospheric temperature, pressure, and water vapor are obtained by Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) simulation, which takes advantage of computational resources. An extensive sequence of simulations for various terrains and atmospheric refractivities, as well as different source-receiver arrangements and operating frequencies, serves to calibrate these algorithms one against the other, and establishes the range of problem parameters for which each is more effective.
