Paleo-Earthquake Study of the Liuchia Fault

The Liuchia Fault, located at the boundary between the Chiayi Hills and the CoastalPlain, is an active thrust fault; Pleistocene Liushuang Formation appears at the hangingwalland Holocene marine sediments (the Tainan Formation) seat at the footwall. Lineaments andother geomorphic features are clear alone the fault trace. It is relatively easy for a geologist torecognize the fault active line. Holocene marine sediments provide good opportunity inreserving paleo-earthquake features. Therefore, it would have good sites for paleo-earthquakestudy. Besides intensive review of stratigraphy and neotectonics of the Tainan Formation, thisproject will excavate trenches at the Liuchia Fault in the Guantian District, Tainan City,investigate the overlapping features of Holocene marine sediments on the LiushuangFormation and their cutting relationships. We will perform mcro-stratigraphic andmicrotectonic analyses, collect samples for C-14 dating, resolve age and move sense as wellas slip distance for each paleo-earthquake. We will also assess magnitude of apaleo-earthquake and calculate average slip-rate of the fault. These data can be used tocalculate conditional probability of future earthquake occurrence and build a characteristicearthquake model which can be used in modern probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. This isa one year project. Three big trenches will be excavated and related analytical works will bedone. Knowledge of the Tainan Formation and neotectonics will be fully used in theassessment of the trench results.
