The purpose of this proposal is to study Mainlanders’ housing status in terms of occupation and generation,so as to explore the complexities involving ethnicity, class and generation. For most of the Mainlanders andtheir Taiwan-born descendants, “settling down” in an irreversible immigration process. However, how dothey settle down in terms of living arrangement or housing issue? What matters could include long-termhistorical circumstances and international political-economic structure, personal demographic andsocio-economic attributes such as age, education, occupation type, rank, living area etc., political clientelism,housing regulation and policy, generation pattern etc. Occupation, policy and generation are the threeindependent variables in this proposal. Analysis will be focused on the housing status of Mainlanders as adependent variable. Literature review and in-depth field interview account for the major methods for datacollection. In short, this study is to explore the social reality and theoretical implication of Mainlanders’housing status, with analyses on the significance of occupation type, regulation policy and generationalpattern.
