Project Details
Description
This project is located in Fuxing District, Taoyuan City, which is a Atayal settlement with a large area of Phyllostachys reticulata production. However, although the Fuxing District has abundant bamboo reserves, since Taiwan completely banned the felling of natural forests in 1992, it has become a misconception that logging and chopping bamboo means destroying mountain forests. In fact, forest land needs to be thinned regularly to get the best effect of carbon fixation and soil and water conservation. Therefore, the goal of this project is to make good use of natural bamboo to protect the mountain environment and at the same time provide employment opportunities for local residents to increase the incentives to retain the young local population. On the other hand, to cope with the impact of climate change, sustainable development of forests has become an important net zero carbon reduction policy. In addition to the forecast by the Forest Service that the self-sufficiency rate of domestic timber will reach 5% in 2027, the Executive Yuan also adopted the Outline Plan for the Development of Emerging Bamboo Industry in 2022, which will promote the development of the overall industrial chain in the upper, middle and lower reaches of the bamboo industry. At the common node of international trends, policy implementation and local demand, this project has played an important role in realizing sustainable development of forests. In concrete actions, the project and local partners jointly put forward the case of local creation of the National Development Council, which has been approved. Not only will a bamboo production preparation yard be set up in Fuxing District, but also high-efficiency bamboo cutting talents will be cultivated simultaneously, which will effectively promote the innovation of production and marketing mode of bamboo industry and improve the profit and added value of Phyllostachys reticulata production. At the same time, the sustainable environment involves related factors, such as water source, disaster prevention, circular economy and talent cultivation. This project also gives back the learning results to the native tribes through culturally sensitive science education and social practice programs.
