Project Details

Description

Paintings of country houses are of great significance for the development of British landscape paintings from the early 18th century to the mid-19th century. As the most famous painters of British landscape paintings, J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) and John Constable (1776-1837) also left some country house paintings. However, since the 20th century, such paintings have been ignored in exhibitions devoted to Turner and Constable. This three-year project aims to explore the landscape paintings of country houses by Turner, Constable, and their contemporaries, and to reflect on the changing evaluation of such paintings during the last two centuries. The first year of the project focuses on Turner; the second year focuses on Constable and extends to other contemporary painters. The third year will explore the histories of publication and exhibition of country house paintings, and to examine the changing evaluation of such paintings from the 19th century to the present day. The results of the research will not only clarify the development of country house landscape paintings, but also provide a framework to reflect on the way of seeing representative British painters.
