In Taiwan, three quarters of the island comprises hilly and mountainous areas, with small drainagebasins and steep stream gradients. Affected by active tectonics, frequent typhoons and storms, and humanactivities over mountainous ranges, landslides can frequently occur during typhoon seasons. The effect ofclimate change, in addition, on the increase of rainfall intensity also elevates the potential of landslide hazard.An accurate and efficient real-time landslide forecast system is therefore important to landslide hazardmanagement for Taiwan. Many landslide models have been proposed under studiesof“back-forecast”practices; however, a real-time forecast exercise has rarely been operated. Hence, theproject aims to propose a real-time landslide forecast system. By integrating the real-time typhoon rainfallforecast, the landslide model is expected to provide landslide predictions of 6h, 12 h, 24 h, 48 h and72 hbefore the arrival of a future typhoon. To evaluate the performance of the model, the project will also applychange detection technique using satellite images before and after typhoon events to delineate landslide areas.These mapped landslides can be the basis of model validation.
