Impacts of Extreme Events on Offshore Sandbars Migration off Yun-Lin and Chia-Yi Coastline

Project Details

Description

The aim of this project is to understand the impact of climate change extreme events on the change of offshore sandbars along the coastal zone of Yun-lin and Chia-yi county. In this research, we use on-site surveys and numerical simulations of change of San-tiau-luen sandbar. In the first year of this study, we use on-site observations of the San-tiau-luen sandbar. The observation instruments include the microwave radars developed by our group and the application of microwave radars to shoreline and intertidal topographic measurement techniques; using miniature buoys to study the mixing and diffusion and Water Exchange Capacity in the lagoon of the San-tiau-luen Sandbar; we will also build an multiparameter sonde system to survey the water quality. And we will use the NearCoM-TVD numerical model and DHI MIKE numerical model to study the drift sand moving process. The research results expected in this study include: 1. Understanding of the key factors affect the hydrodynamics and sediment transport of the San-tiau-luen Sandbar; 2. Understanding the strength, range and time of the impact on the changes of the San-tiau-luen Sandbar under typhoons; 3. Understanding the effect of oyster reefs to the current field and the change of the topography. The results of the change of San-tiau-luen Sandbar in this project can provide the results for vulnerability analysis of coastal aquaculture fisheries affected by climate chang, and could also provide other projects for the impact assessment of the fishery industry and human society.
