A356 (Al-7Si-0.3Mg) is an aluminum alloy with good fluidity, corrosion resistance and weldability. Our cooperative company currently produces this alloy as motorcycle components. Because the commercial A356 alloys use 30% of recycling material, which contains a lot of Fe, it is subject to forming acicular iron intermetallic phase. As a result, these alloys become brittle, and their mechanical properties are easily damaged. At present, the cooperative company is limited by its own research and development capabilities. The company can not effectively reduce the amount of acicular iron intermetallic phase to increase the application of the alloy. Therefore, they hope to enhance the level of their skills in manufacturing A356 through this project.In this project, manganese (Mn) is added to A356 (Al-7Si-0.3Mg) alloy. The improvement of the acicular iron intermetallic phase is then evaluated by microstructures and mechanical properties. We expect to enhance effectively the mechanical properties of the alloy with cost down, and to make good use of natural resources.Manganese can improve the ductility of A356 alloy and enhance the quality of the alloy, but the actual manufacturing principle is not known to the cooperative company. For this reason, in this project we will thoroughly explore and understand its principle to improve A356 aluminum quality. We wish to maintain or upgrade reliable mechanical properties, and at the same time to achieve the effect of environmental protection and to reduce waste.
