Development of Organs-On-Chip System for Rapid Cancer Drug Screening

Cancer is a major public health problem in the world. Most commonly applied cancer treatment is by operating surgery to remove tumor and treat with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. However, the chemotherapy effect varies from person to person. If chemotherapy can’t be properly made at the first time, precious lives can be lose. Additionally, more and more evidence shows that chemotherapy is not effect way to treat cancer. Other cancer treatment approach should be developed. Therefore, in this research proposal, we propose using microfluidic system as organ-on-chip device to mimic the organ environment. And further integrate nanostructured silicon electrochemical analysis platform and mass spectrometry analysis to screen chemotherapy drugs, providing each individual patient’s optimize drug recommendations for medical doctor use. This research cooperate with the research group in Cathy General Hospital and three important research stages are planned. First stage focus on developing the microfluidic organ-on-chip system and nanostructured silicon sensing components. Second stage focus on analyzing the metabolic and phosphoproteins while cancer cell subject to chemical or physical signals. Third stage focus on system integration and automationfor high throughput drug screening purpose for cancer treatment.
