Project Details
Description
We have proposed a two-year research project and aimed to develop novel three-photon fluorescentmaterials and study the related photophysical properties. The materials can be utilized in manyapplications such as optical frequency conversion, power-limiting, fluorescent probes, photodynamictherapy and nondestructive bio-imaging/tracking. Due to its intrinsic penetration and opticalconfinement ability, the performance of three-photon materials is theoretically predicted to be muchmore superior to two-photon materials for the aforementioned applications. We will design andsynthesize several series of new conjugated heterocycle-containing polyarenes systems that combineadditional considerations on good structural coplanarity, solubility, and emission properties. Weexpect to observe enhanced three-photon aborptivities from the proposed molecules due to theirhighly conjugated structures and the involvement of hereto-atoms. We plan to combine our currentfemtosecond laser system with the proposed optical parametric oscillator (OPO) to build anexcitation light source covering 680 to 2000 nm, which is the most essential tool for our proposedresearch project. With the availability of this excitation source, we can measure both two-photon andthree-photon absorption spectra of the studied materials and elucidate the detailed structure-propertyrelationship. Such research is beneficial for the molecular design toward high performancethree-photon materials. Moreover, we will also study the nonlinear absorption properties in the filmstate based on our proposed compounds to evaluate the feasibility of using such materials forsolid-state devices. In addition, we plan to focus our attention particularly on the opticalpower-limiting and photostability of the proposed materials especially within the nanosecondtime-domain.
