The World-Wide Sensor Web has become a useful technique for monitoring the physical world at spatial and temporal scales that were impossible in the past. With the development and deployment of sensor technologies and interoperable open standards, the sensor web is able to connect various types of sensors located worldwide and performs observations at high frequency. This large amount of near-real-time sensor data streams produced by the sensor web allows us to continuously monitor the environment and provide efficient decision-making for time-critical events (e.g., disasters or security breaches). However, the traditional database management system (DBMS) is not efficient enough to process continuous data streams. In this project, we propose a data stream management system (DSMS) for the sensor web. This system will follow the continuous query processing model to first accept query registration from users and then process registered queries when the system receives a new sensor data. In this case, we can ensure that all the queries are processed upon sensor data’s arrival and provide timely notifications to users. In general, this project is innovative because ⑴ the proposed system can collect and integrate continuous data streams from different kinds of sensor web data sources, (2) the system provides a coherent environment for users to access the continuous data streams from the World-Wide Sensor Web, and (3) users are empowered to continuously monitor the environment based on their queries and receive timely notifications. The proposed system could be applied to various domain applications, such as meteorological monitoring, air/water pollution monitoring, civil structure health monitoring, and emergency response systems. Overall, we believe this project is a necessary step to harness the full potential of the World-Wide Sensor Web.
