The monsoon Asia, the most populated region on earth nowadays, has aclear wet-dry-season feature as well as frequent alternatives of drought andflood events. Therefore, understanding changes of precipitation pattern in thepast and future over Monsoon Asia is not just an issue of great scientificinterest, but can also serve as a foundation for assessing meteorologicaldisasters and planning agriculture development by those countries locating inthis region. In this project, the high-resolution APHRODITE griddedprecipitation dataset will be employed as a major basis, along with severalatmosphere and ocean reanalysis datasets, to examine the changes of strongprecipitation (>90 percentile) and extreme precipitation (> 99 percentile)events in Monsoon Asia over the past 50+ years. Some popular climatediagnostic methods (e.g., singular value decomposition, moisture budget) arealso utilized to explore the possible physical mechanisms responsible forsuch changes.
