Description

The underground mass transit system network is developed rapidly in urban area. The density of underground tunnel for subway or mass rapid transit increases as time goes on. Taiwan locates at the circum-Pacific earthquake zone, there are many active faults around this island and earthquakes occur frequently. The tunnel would damage and deform induced by the strong ground motion. In additionally, if the tunnel is nearby the active fault, the shear zone also affect the tunnel while the fault slips. On the other hand, if the urban renewal plan is carried out in the future, the the deep excavation would affect the existed tunnel nearby the site during earthquake or nearby the shear zone of fault. Therefore, this three years' project would conduct a series of centrifuge modeling tests to investigate (1) the seismic response of the shallow cut-and-cover rectangular tunnel in different ground deposit conditions; (2) the interaction between the shallow cut-and-cover rectangular tunnel and the shear zone of fault; (3) the interaction between the excavation and the shallow cut-and-cover rectangular tunnel during earthquake or nearby the shear zone of fault. The results can be used to improve the design and provide suggestions for the shallow cut-and-cover rectangular tunnel.
