Assessment of Multiyear El Nino Southern Oscillation Impact on Taiwan$S Reservoir and Coastal Water Quality

This proposed research aims to assess the impact of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), arising in2015, on water quality around Pacific and specifically near Taiwan. The altimetry and remotesensing satellites will be first used for monitoring large-scale variation in atmosphere and sea-level,and its connectivity with western Pacific. The next is to use optical remote sensing satellite toquantify chlorophyll-a and total suspended solids (TSS) concentration. In the mean time, labanalysis of in situ water samples will be conducted to evaluate water quality indicators. We will useground measurement to calibrate/validate (Cal/Val) spaceborne sensors and develop revised watercolor algorithms. The goal of this project is to quantify the level of eutrophication in water bodiesdue to integrated land misuse and decadal atmospheric variation. We will investigate thevulnerability of water resources in inland and coastal areas, and propose a potential amelioration.
