Applying Big Data to Learning Analytics: the Development of Institutional Research System

The goal of Institutional Research (IR) is to assist university making better decisions about institutional plan and execution by providing the statistics analysis information of the operation situation in university. For this reason, Ministry of Education (MOE) began promoting to establish the office of Institutional Research in university level since 2015. Following MOE, industry also devoted to develop Institutional Research system. Chain Sea Information Integration Co., Ltd. has develop the product of School Insight to provide the solution of Institutional Research for university. Therefore, based on product of School Insight, this study has cooperate with the Chain Sea Information Integration Co., Ltd. to investigate the learning analytics in Institutional Research. In order to promote students’ learning outcome and decrease students5 dropout rate, this study aims to predict at-risk students to help instructors’ timely intervention through the proposed prediction models of learning outcome and dropout. This study applies machine learning algorithms to construct two prediction models. In order to promote the market share in IR system and increase the influence of Chain Sea Information Integration Co., Ltd, this study integrates learning analytics module into School Insight to extend the functionality of IR product.
