A Visualized Three-Dimensional Atmospheric and Oceanic Battlefield Intelligence Platform

Project Details

Description

There are a huge amount of atmosphere, oceans, geography, and satellite photos information on the websites (e.g., government open data platform, NASA's e yes, Pacific Disaster Center, ETOPO1, etc.) today. Ifthese open data resources can be integrated in the Navy's "Atmospheric and Oceanic Battlefield IntelligencePlatform", then it will be able to greatly improve the efficiency and integrity of the platform. In addition, itwill effectively improve the use of battlefield intelligence benefits. In the second year, we have improved theperformance of the Navy's "Atmospheric and Oceanic Battlefield Intelligence Platform" via the integration ofopen data. One of the main goals of the third-year project is to further improve "Atmospheric and OceanicBattlefield Intelligence Platform" via a close combination between the platform and the civil resources suchas atmosphere, oceans, geography, and satellite photos information on the web sites. Therefore, we will adoptthe wrapper developed in the second year to parse more open data into the platform to make the databases ofthe platform be more prolific. The second goal of the third-year project is to develop a superimposition andediting tool for the platform. This platform has to simultaneously display many different images such asgeography images, ocean models, atmosphere images, and satellite images to let users easily analyze theintegrated information. Due to many factors such as the storing purposes and file formats, these imagesparsed from the Internet can’t be overlaid together on the platform. We need to develop an image processingalgorithm to make images’ background be transparent so that they can be overlay together. In addition, wealso need to offer an editing tool to facilitate the user to directly edit the open data obtained from the privatesectors to produce reports. Taking into account the special nature of military networks, the focus of the thirdyear is to strengthen information security problems. We must comply with the military’s standard operatingprocedures. We need to directly off the network after the platform connected to the civil Internet has updatedits open data. Then, we need to develop a good man-machine interface to offer the user who can operateanother platform connected only on military networks to effectively achieve and maintain a continuallyupdated data repository.
