Project Details

Description

There were 684 plates of bones and tortoise shells with oracle bone inscriptions unearthed in the oracle bone pit H3, east of the Huayuan Village within the Yin Ruins of Anyang, Henan in the autumn of 1991 where there are over 300 plates intact and huge, almost the half to the total and thus they are precious data to the oracle bone studies. There are considerable new inscribed characters identified in these oracle bones where some are unseen in the old oracle bones and some share various glyphs against the old ones, subject to new variants. Formerly, the oracle bone studies used to value the comparative analytics between those newly found and those recorded in the Compendium of oracle inscriptions of the Shang dynasty in order to explore the glyph, the word amount and the word frequency ofthe specific characters in oracle inscriptions but failed to engagement in any comparison between and verification against the Yin-Zhou clan emblem bronze writings in the same era. A Study on Special Characters in "Bones and tortoise shells unearthed east of the Huayuan Village within the Yin Ruins" adopts the oracle bone specific inscriptions unearthed east of the Huayuan Village within the Yin Ruins as the subject. According to the previous associated studies, the author reexamined and differentiated the amount and the state of use of the new characters, the new variant characters and the rare characters a.k.a. three sorts of the specific characters in "The oracle inscriptions unearthed east of the Huayuan Village within the Yin Ruins". An overall comparison between the threesorts of the specific characters in the oracle inscriptions and the Yin-Zhou clan emblem bronze writings was done so as to identify the clan emblem bronze writings corresponding to the conformation of the specific characters in "Theoracle inscriptions unearthed east of the Huayuan Village within the Yin Ruins" in order to investigate the corresponding relations and intrinsic associations between the two batches of materials. Hopefully, this study can present a clear picture of the conformation and the state of use of the specific characters in "The oracle inscriptions unearthed east of the Huayuan Village within the Yin Ruins" and investigate the association and corresponding relations in terms of glyphs between the foregoing and the bronze inscriptions of Yin-Zhou clan emblems as well.
