Project Details

Description

H. W. G. Hayter (Henry William Goodenough Hayter, 1862-1915) was a British cartoonistand illustrator who went to Shanghai in 1882 in order to establish a career; he left China inMay 1915 due to declining health. During the 1880s he participated in the activities of theShanghai Art Society for more than three years. He also illustrated three books ofhumorous verse published by John Otway Percy Bland (1863-1945), Jay Denby (British),and J. Em. Lemière. He was the chief cartoonist for The Rattle (1896-1903) and later forthe self-published weekly, The Eastern Sketch (1904-1908). In 1935, the Chinesecartoonist Wang Dunqing (1899-1990) wrote a short article introducing Hayter’s cartoonsin The Rattle and expressed the opinion that these were probably the first cartoons thatChinese people knew about. More recent scholars believe that he was one of the foundersof modern Chinese cartoon style. A number of English-language studies on the ShanghaiInternational Settlement mention The Eastern Sketch or reprint some of his cartoons, butno one has carefully examined his life and cartoon style. J. O. P. Bland, who worked withHayter for a time, once praised Hayter’s work in comparison with that of the younger andmore well-known English cartoonist George Belcher (1875-1947) and said that Hayterwould have been equally renowned had he not been living in distant Shanghai. This articlewill thus delve into the stylistic origins of Hayter’s cartoons and analyze their satirical andcritical stances on the political events of their time.
