The tectonic structures in the transition zone between the subduction andcollision of two convergent plates boundary is very complex. Taiwan is justsituated in the zone between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate;however, to the east of Taiwan, the Philippine Sea Plate has subductednorthward along the Ryukyu Trench, while to the south of Taiwan the EurasianPlate has subducted eastward along the Manila Trench. The geological featuresare complicated in each junction area between the subduction and collisionboundaries in either eastern Taiwan or southern Taiwan. The transition from platesubduction to collision or vice versa has caused numerous earthquakes. Becausethe tectonics is very active in the plate subduction/collision transition in easternTaiwan of in southern Taiwan, it becomes a wonderful place to study how theinteraction between the plate subduction and collision. We can not only study thecrustal structure but also the crustal deformation due to the platesubduction/collision interaction. Through this study, we can even betterunderstand the seismotectonics in such a plate transition zone. For this threeyearproject we will use large-offset multichannel seismic and Sparker seismicprofiles, deep-tow sonar, multi-beam bathymetry, gravity and geomagnetic datato study the geological structures a deformation of the transitional crust. A betterunderstanding the geological structures and interaction of the convergent zonebetween the subduction and collision of plates around Taiwan can also largelyhelp us assess the potential earthquake and tsunami hazard.
