This project aims to expand the scope of the Visual Culture Research Center, funded by the BenchMark project MOE, to form a stronger research team on visual culture, incorporating scholars of visual culture studies on campus and from other universities and industry. Led by professor Wenchi Lin, the center will have three main research groups:Art Studies (Coordinator: Chia-chuan Hsieh)Film Studies (Coordinator: Wenchi Lin)Theater and Performance Studies (Coordinator: Hui-ling Chou)The center aims to actively promote the development of each research group and interdisciplinary interactions by organizing symposiums, publishing newsletter, and providing administrative assistance. It will also ensure the sharing of resources and encourage cutting edge research projects.The project will establish the center as a research hub for doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars in the fields of art studies, film studies, and theater and performance studies so as to promote cutting-edge research projects and provide an exciting academic environment for them to be competitive scholars with contributions. It will also set up a certificate program on visual culture in the College of Liberal Arts, which will provide courses related to visual culture studies. It will invite speakers from the creative industries to provide students with professional knowledge to better prepare them for future careers.In response to the government forward-looking plan to reconstruct the art history of Taiwan, and in order to probe into the dynamic artistic and cultural relations between the many forms of visual culture, such as painting, photography, print images, moving images, theater, performance, and technology as well as the intertwining development among their industries, the center's research groups will devote five years to conduct cutting-edge research projects on the following subjects: Art Studies:Practices of Looking and Constructions of Art-historical ViewsVisual Culture of Ming and Qing Dynasty Film Studies:Rediscovering the History of Taiwan Cinema before 1980.Moving Images and TechnologyTheater and Performance StudiesModern and Contemporary Taiwan Theatre & Performance Industry History.The Transformation of Kunqu's Stage Settings.Members of each group will apply for fundings from NStTC and organize workshops and international conferences. Research results will be published in top-notch journals and in books to elevate their impact in academia and society at large. To become the most influential center in Taiwan, the project will promote international research cooperation by establishing official relationship via signing "Letter of Intent" or MOU to organize scholarly events and publications. The center will invite at least two established scholars for short-term visits and welcome young scholars to do research at the center. It will also send graduate students and young members to go abroad for conferences and research visits. Work closely with corporations and government agencies on cooperation projects. The center will support Kunqu Museum, Art History Strolls blog, Image Education Innovation Lab website, Ming-Qing Studies web platform, the databases of theater and performance studies, as well as the publication of memoirs by Taiwan senior actors and actresses, World Sinophone Drama Competition for Young Playwrights. It will organize workshops, collect oral histories, and make significant contributions to creative industry, cultural preservation, and art education.
