Local scouring of foundation is the major failure mode of bridges of Taiwan in the past decade. Currently, the bridge management authorities of Taiwan close the bridge traffic during flood based on the accumulated rainfall in the upper stream reaching to a certain value. However, for the bridges located at the site with weak geological conditions, serious scour may be generated even at water level lower than the warning value. The scouring depth is the key factor for the bridge instability during flood. Only when the fluid-structure interaction behaviors were well understood, one can determine the warning and action levels and evaluate the hazard resistivity and safety of a bridge.
