Description
In this advanced research project, the academic will cooperate with the ironmaking industry of Taiwan to execute “Development of low-carbon blastfurnace ironmaking technology”. Blast-furnace process is the most energyefficient technology of the ironmaking industry by reducing the iron ore with the carbon fuel. However, Blast-furnace process causes high CO2 emission, which accounts for 80% CO2 emission of the integrated steel maker. Hence, the lowcarbon blast furnace becomes one of the most important issues in worldwide to reach the target of carbon neutrality in 2050. Our team investigated the developments of the low carbon burst furnace from other projects and steel makers across the world and proposed three subprojects in this study to achieve the future low-carbon blast furnace technology of Taiwan by replacing Carbon with Hydrogen. The first issue is “Low Carbon (LC)”, in which the low carbon feedstocks, such as hot briquetted iron (HBI), are used to replace the iron ore and reduces the amount of the coke needed for the iron reduction. The second issue is “Hydrogen Rich (HR)”. In this part, the hydrogen-rich gas, such as coke oven gas (COG), will be blasted in the furnace for the iron ore reduction. And the final part is “Gas Recycle (GR)”, Carbon capture and utilization (CCU) process isperformed to reduce the emission of CO2. Instead of the carbon fixation, this project will develop the CO2 reverse process by water-gas shift reaction and then re-blast the recycled gas into the low carbon blast furnace. By executing these three subprojects simultaneously, this research could help Taiwan ironmaking industry to achieve the low-carbon blast furnace technology and the ultimate target of the carbon neutrality in 2050.
