Description
The project re-examines the various discourses in digital game (or video games) studies, which revolve around game design, the player, and play, and explores the relationship between video games and the neoliberal subject. In general, digital game theories focus on how to understand and define the medium specificity of video games and the subjectivity of the player, while the social and cultural meanings of the unique gameplay of video games inevitably involve the ontology of play, namely, its philosophical meanings. The project argues that in constructing the meanings of the video-game-related practices, both the claims of the interventionist position of game designer and the player-centric discourses tend to hover extreme subjectivism, while when borrowing from non-digital play theories, both approaches need more dialectical understanding of the ontology of play. The project will re-examine the interventionist discourses of video games and the ontology of play in alignment with Adorno's understanding of play as dialectical to praxis, and explore the neoliberal gaming subject for the possibility to transcend its constitutive subjectivity through the aesthetic experiences of play.
