Project Details
Description
Based on the seabed geological survey, previous studies suggested that Kueishantao volcanic island has probably erupted four times in the past 7000 years. The eruptions of the volcanic island are often accompanied by the collapse of the volcano's flank. There are evident traces of collapse on the side of Kueishantao Island facing the Lanyang Plain. Through the seabed survey, Prof. Shu-Kun Hsu's team found that the seabed sediments of Kueishantao Island collapsed were mainly composed of three massive lithic landslides (MTD1, MTD2, MTD3). Among them, the volcanic eruption on the north side of Kueishantao Island was the main contribution of MTD2, while MTD3 was caused by the cutting of the terrain by subsequent ocean currents and the volcanic eruption 7000 years ago, which led to submarine landslides. Since Kueishantao Island is an active volcano, it may erupt again in the future. If the eruption causes the collapse of the existing island, it may cause a tsunami. Since its collapse is facing the Lanyang Plain, the impact of its potential tsunami on the coastal area of Yilan cannot be ignored. This project will use the discontinuous bi-viscous model (DBM) newly developed last year, with the conventional Bingham Model (BM), and the third-generation fluid-structure interaction method, the Rigid-Fluid Method, to simulate volcanic flank slump-type landslide, tsunami kinematics, and reconstruct the distribution of the seabed sediments on Kueishantao Island. Splash3D will be adopted to simulate the generation of the potential tsunami waves caused by the scenario of the collapse of Kueishantao Island. The wave height and arrival time of the tsunami propagating to the coast of Yilan and the inundation area of the tsunami will be obtained. In the end, the COMCOT tsunami model will be used to calculate the propagation of the tsunami waves.
