FORMOSAT-7 has been successfully launched on 25 June 2019 to replenish thedecommissioned FORMOSAT-3, which can provide up to 5000 high-resolutionatmospheric soundings within 45oN and 45oS from RO observations where bothderived bending angle and refractivity can be directly assimilated intoatmospheric models to increase model initial accuracy and the retrieved verticaltemperature and moisture profiles can largely supplement the insufficiency oftraditional soundings and will be helpful for global and regional analyses of theatmosphere. For continuing the improvements on RO research with advanceddata assimilation skill, following the research plan guided by the SpaceInformation Technology Division we team up academic and operationalresearchers and jointly submit a one-year integrated project consisting of fivesubprojects for seeking for vigorous improvements including RO data impacts onglobal and model regional assimilation and prediction at CWB and academicinstitutes, RO beneficial influence on mechanisms and simulations of tropicalcyclogenesis and southwesterly flow, RO data application to improving largescale MJO analysis for southwesterly flow and typhoon activity. Most ROpenetration of FORMOSAT-7 can reach near-surface and thus can provide usefultemperature and moisture soundings of the planetary boundary layer. This projectaims at scientific innovations by ameliorating data assimilation systems,developing refinement of RO operators and optimization of RO data usage,particularly seeking for the optimal RO observation-error estimation for firmlyintegrating the model and observations in this project, in order to enlargeassimilation merits and obtain the maximized benefits of RO data on disasterpredication and warning for severe weathers in 2021-2023.
