Project Details
Description
As has been recognized by previous studies, warm-up activities could facilitateathletic performance (Bishop, 2003a; Woods et al., 2007; Behm & Chaouachi, 2011) by increasing body temperature and metabolism (McGowan et al., 2015). However, its effects on cognitive functions remain unclear and elusive. Given that superb reaction time, attention and decision making are critical for sportsperformance, it is essential for us to understand how warm-up activities modulate these cognitive functions and their underlying mechanisms in order to maximize these effects. In this project, we propose to investigate different warm-up activities and their influences on cognition by employing the precision cognitive neuroscientific measures such as electroencephalography (EEG), pinch/grip force analyzer and also some novel nonlinear dynamic data analytical methods (e.g Holo-Hilbert Spectrum Analysis; HHSA; Huang et al., 2016; Nguyen et al., 2019a&b). The proposed work comprises three phases: 1) the first phase is the warm-up activities design. There will be two types of warm-up activities, static stretching with dynamic stretching, and static stretching with warm-up activities designed for specific sports. The athletes will be distributed into the above two groups for different warm-up activities. 2) The second phase will focus on the assessment of cognitive functions affected by the warm-up activities. The visual latency, time perception/ action preparation, visual attention and precision motor control tasks will be conducted and their corresponding brainwaves will also be collected. 3) The third phase will test the sport performance after different warm-up activities in order to examine their cognitive/ behavioral effects and to elucidate the underlying neural correlates. We expect this integrative project will objectively qualtify the effects of warm-up activities on cognitive and sports performance then construct a synergistic theory in order to provide suggestions for researchers, training committees, coaches, instructors and athletes to develope more effective warm-up programs, the assessment of athletes’ capabilities for the improvement of the performance.
