Description

The project goals are to utilize existing HF (high frequency) Doppler sounding systems examining traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) to have a better understanding on sea surface vertical motions induced by seismic waves, tsunami waves, sea waves, etc. and by tropospheric perturbations triggered by severe weathers, fronts, typhoons, etc., as well as studying HF communication environments between Dongsha/Taiping Island and Taiwan. Currently, a network of 5 sets of HF Doppler sounding systems has been routinely operating to observe TIDs over the land area of Taiwan. The establish of receiving stations at Dongsha Island and Taiping Island to receive HF signals from the existing 5 transmitters in Taiwan that shall allow us evaluating sea surface motions, tropospheric environments, and HF communication conditions between the two islands and Taiwan for various local times, seasons, and solar activities. Meanwhile, data of existing ionosondes in Taiwan and observations of FORMOSAT-7 are used to support and validate results obtained by the HF Doppler sounding systems.
