戰爭與責任：民國時期中醫救護隊與西醫知識之傳輸(1931-1945)

Many past studies investigated the Sino-Japanese War from 1937 to 1945. However, they mainly laid particular stress on military and diplomatic aspects. Although there are regional differences (e.g. enemy and the puppet regime zone or Home Front), relevant cultural and historical studies have also been gradually initiated in recent years. This study intends to explore issues that were seldom investigated in the past studies on history of Chinese medicine using mainly the speeches and actions concerning Chinese medicine during the wartime: relationship among Chinese medicine, war, and nation. Since modern times, the slow development of surgical skills and physiological knowledge in Chinese medicine has been an indisputable fact. However, the outbreak of Sino-Japanese War forced the Chinese medicine field to start to reflect on the connection among traditional knowledge, survival and destruction of the nation, and treatment of patients with war wounds. The investigation in this study found that Chinese medicine field at the time constantly reflected on knowledge of surgeries, first aid, and drug in ancient medicine in the hope that such knowledge can be put into practice during wartime. Moreover, Chinese medicine field also endeavored to open new schools and hospitals to develop various possibilities for social practices of such knowledge and actually treat patients with war wounds. They generally suggested that Chinese medicine should not be absent from wars and national disasters. In addition to abundant investigations on history of Chinese medicine itself, this study also intends to supplement the arguments in the existing history of the Sino-Japanese War as an auxiliary and supplemental investigation for traditional studies that laid particular stress on political and military history to enrich the whole picture of this segment of history.
