Project Details

Description

The “they-group” included in the “we-group” in intermarriage, which means social distance is lessened, provides a lens of discerning ethnic relations. However, ethnic relations refer to relationality and contexts, in which different ethnic groups relate to each other. In the inter mountain areas along the 3rd Taiwan Provincial Road, the Hakka in Taiwan have interacted with the Saysiyat historically, politically and economically. Therefore the relationship between the Hakka and the Saysiyat is based on the local context. However, the intermarriage rate between the Hakka males in Taiwan and those females from Indonesia is a bit higher than the former intermarriage type. In order to illustrate the completeness and complexity of intermarriage, this project is analyzed in three levels: history and state on the macro level, ethnic culture and consciousness on the median level, and the individual everyday life on the micro level. The concept "intersectionality" is a useful analytic tool for highlighting intersected causes and levels in intermarriage. The concept “intersectionality” de-essentializes both parties involved in intermarriage and their cultures. Instead, the dynamic is revealed. In this sense, the particular context in which intermarriage takes place, and the process of cultural adaption and cultural practices are rendered visible, so that we could comprehend the changing faces of the society, culture and identity of the both parties involved. Moreover, religion in intermarriage inspires us to rethink the hierarchy and power relationship involved in gender and ethnicity
