Project Details
Description
The proposed study is based on the Inter-Ministerial Cooperation Agreement signed by the Ministry of Science and Technology (Department of Natural Sciences and Sustainable Development) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs (Water Resources Agency). The study focuses on the areas of Changhua and Yunlin counties in the Choushui river alluvial fan. In the study, the research issues include (1) investigations and analyses and implementations of groundwater environment data, (2) improvements of monitoring technologies forland subsidence, (3) analyses of land subsidence mechanisms and management strategies, and (4) investigations of seawater intrusion and the definition of intrusion areas. The objectives of the study are to conduct efficient management of research task connections and develop advanced technologies that cansupport the strategies of mitigating land subsidence in the Choushui river groundwater basin. The scientific verifications aim to understand the land subsidence mechanisms and improve future monitoring, analyses, andmanagement of severe land subsidence areas in Taiwan. For groundwater salinity issues in the distal fan area of the Choushui river groundwater basin, supplementary investigations and experiments were proposed to develop efficient techniques for monitoring and managing groundwater salinity. In the first year of the four-year project, the main tasks focus on the developments of techniques and characterization of subsidence mechanisms. The study reviews recent and novel technologies and collects site-specific data. In the second year, the studyfocuses on the laboratory- and field-scale tests and analyses. These controlled conditions allow the assessments of environmental factors that might constrain and influence the implementations of the developed techniques. The tasks in the third year are to conduct field-scale verifications for the developed monitoring techniques and simulation models. The developed models aim to reproduce the land subsidence mechanisms and groundwater salinity dynamics with the available site-specific observations. Management strategies and operations arethen derived based on the developed monitoring techniques and models. In the fourth year, the developed techniques and models will implement in the entire Choushui river groundwater basin to monitor and manage land subsidence and groundwater salinity .
