Project Details
Description
The purpose of this research plan is to provide a demographic check on the early-period spacial/geographic distribution of Mainland soldiers, with an attempt to collect household registration data and to theorize the concept of self-supported Chuan-tsuan, military communes. This research plan will be implemented in two years. The first year will focus on the counties in the eastern and northern parts of Taiwan and the second year will cover the rest of the island, i.e., the central and the southern parts of Taiwan. A non-intrusive method is adopted to collect official household records to calculate the amounts and distribution of Mainland veterans discharged before and after 1968. It is hoped that the result of this research plan can help to revise the stereotype that most of the mainland solders and their families lived in registered military communes. In addition, we wish this research result can provide an in-depth understanding of the settlement experiences of the 1949 immigrants of Taiwan.
