Solid recovered fuel (SRF) is derived from mainly non-hazardous waste andproduced in accordance with the requirements on calorific value andenvironmental parameters. SRF has gone through additional screeningprocesses to improve the quality and value. It is gradually becoming a popularand viable option for replacing fossil fuels worldwide. Co-firing of SRF and coal influidized bed boiler produces ashes that their physical and chemicalcharacteristics are not known, making the utilization of these ashes difficult. Thisstudy plans to investigate the potential of boiler ashes produced from co-firingcoal and SRF in fluidized bed boilers as supplementary cementitious materials ormineral mixture in making concrete. The study will start with investigating current status of SRF as supplementaryfuels for coal-burning boilers in the industry. Representative boiler ash samplesproduced from boilers co-firing coal and SRF will be collected for basiccharacterization tests such as specific gravity, sieving, adsorption, pH, andchemical contents. Based on the basic characteristics of ashes obtained from cofired boilers, an evaluation on the potential of these ashes as supplementarycementitious materials or mineral mixture for concrete will be assessed. Also, theneed for further treatment of these ashes will be considered. The focus of theevaluation includes not only the general criteria used for pozzolanic materials ormineral mixture. The results of the laboratory study will be summarized such thatthe pros and cons of such utilization can be disclosed and a criteria will bedeveloped on the quality standards of co-fired boiler ashes for use as concretemaking materials. The finding will help the administrative authority in drawing upthe codes in the management of the boiler ashes derived from boilers co-firingSRF and coal.
