Description
Over a half century there has been a rapid development in the field of Chinese dialectology. The newly published monographs, dictionaries, linguistic reports, and countless journal papers have greatly enriched our overall nderstanding of the most populous branch of the Sino-Tibetan languages. But even after the achievement of comparative Min phonology and Common Min vocabulary is gradually reaching the consensus, we still have to dig out more linguistic facts about Southern Min in rural Taiwan, Fujian, Guangdong and Hainan. This one-year plan is going to conduct a more detailed survey on the lexicon, grammar, phonology, and tone sandhi type of Zhangzhou-type Southern Min both in Taiwan (locations within the Taoyuan Municipality, where the informants share the same ancestral hometown with modern Zhangzhou township) and Zhangzhou Prefecture in Fujian (tentatively locations of the Pinghe County) due to their linguistic importance in comparative Southern Min studies.
