Description

Comparing with the finite element method that is powerful for evaluating crustal deformation caused by 3-D variation of crustal structures, the spectral element method is more computational efficient for calculating quasistatic deformation on a laterally (2-D) variable viscoelastic structure in a spherical earth geometry. The results of these two numerical methods will be compared with those of my previous NSC research projects using RELAX (Barbot and Fialko, 2010) to further investigate the rheologic structures beneath Taiwan. Understanding lithospheric rheology can set the stage for future studies on the integration of static stress evaluation (e.g., from Coulomb 3.0) and viscoelastic stress relaxation to carry out temporal evolution of stress field following large earthquakes in Taiwan.
