Description
This three-year project attempts to explore and apply the concept and method ofEntangled History (Histoire Croisée) to study the art history of cross-borderedexchange and inter-influence of Asian theatre in the global era. Entangled history,proposed by French historians Zimmermann and Werner, emphasizescomparative history as a way to transcend “national frameworks,” “breaking witha unidimentional approach.” This project thus aims at studying Asian theatre inTaiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, with a focus on these researchentities in relation to each other and through each other; hence the intersection,interwinging and interweaving, among them. Issues charged include, but nolimited, to the interexchange of theatre programs by them or via them; modes ofmarketing domestic productions on the global stage; patterns of collaborativeinternational productions; and the import-export of creative labor that occurred inthe research Asian entities in the global era. Representative cases will be chosenand thoroughly studied to achieve the ultimate goal and to establish a way towardan Entangled History Asian Theatre in the past half century.
