Project Details
Description
This project aims to reveal the circulation and transaction status of the modernized East Asia cultural space in the late Qing dynasty. The whereabouts of those international culture elites and the dissimilation of their literatures had brought about a knowledge integration mode to the East Asia modernity. This mode is known as a “maritime culture corridor.” At the top of this triangular corridor were metropolitans including Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. Inter-Asia culture aspects were represented through newspapers including: Shun Pao (aka Shanghai News), Wan Guo Gong Bao (aka A Review of the Times), Universal Circulating Herald, Yubin Hochi Shimbun (postal news), Choya Shimbun (the ruling and opposition parties news). These newspapers digested Western dimensions as resources for innovative thinking. Through mutual reproduction of materials among those newspapers, such communication had formed a continuous and circulated culture route.
