中央大學資訊工程研究所創立於1981年，並於 1988 年起招收博士班研究生。1992年時成立資訊工程學系大學部，在資訊科學的教育與研究上提供了完整的系統 。目前我們有445位大學部學生，247位碩士班研究生，93位碩士在職班學生，以及97位博士班研究生。至2014年止已有1399位大學部學生，1291位碩士班研究生，240位碩士在職班學生，以及157位博士班研究生從本系畢業。 在教職員生及歷屆系友的努力之下，教師與學生獲得的榮譽及獎項的數目與日俱增，已發展成國內研究型大學中一個具有特色及聲譽的系所。
