中央大學於民國八十六年由研發處於校務會議提案，成立資訊電機學院。同年十二月，劉兆漢校長亦於校務會議提案，討論本校規程組織，第22條於修正後新增「資訊電機學院」。民國八十七年，校務會議通過，將原屬於工學院之電機工程學系、資訊工程學系劃分出，成立資訊電機學院。首任院長為黃興燦教授。本院自成立以來，致力於創造優質的學習與研究環境，以培養具創新思維與倫理道德之專業研究人才，俾使資訊電機學院能成為對全國、世界具影響力之指標學院。
